I told David that I have to stop watching Downton right before bed. We watched the most recent episode with the demise of Sybil online right before going to bed and I could hardly get to sleep. TOO INTENSE. Yikes. I knew she was going to go, but that was still a pretty intense way to go.
I thought it was interesting that the ranking males were calling the shots – wrongly – and the women and lesser ranking men were right. Sad, really, on so many levels. I can’t imagine being in that kind of situation and giving in. I know I live in a different day and age, but still. As a mother I can’t imagine watching my baby suffer like that and not intervening whether my husband agreed or not. It’s sad to think how often in history the knowledge and intuition of women has been ignored by the ranking men and the suffering that has occurred as a result.
Can I just say that I really don’t like Mary? I really don’t. I’ve tried and I just find her mean. Sybil is dead and Edith asks if they can get along better now. Mary basically tells her to drop dead. I’m sorry, but what a cold, unfeeling, self-centered woman. What Matthew sees in her I don’t know.
On the other hand, I really do like Edith. (I know. I’m probably the opposite of most people watching the show when it comes to Edith and Mary.) I so want her to find a good man and be happy.
Like most people I love love love the Dowager Countess. She gets the best lines and adds so much to the show.
And I have loved seeing the alliance between Thomas and Mrs. O’Brien being broken. Those two were simply awful the first season. Now I love it that Mrs. O’Brien is totally setting up Thomas. Payback time!
I hope Bates gets out soon. I’m done with that storyline. Time to move on.
I’ll stop for now. What do you think of Downton this year?

I had no idea Sybil was going to die so that was a shock. Seems like there’s too many “big” things happening–Edith left at the altar, Sybil dying, losing the family fortune. And they’re skipping over some of the things I was looking forward to seeing the details of–like Mary & Matthew’s wedding.
I’m not a fan of Mary either. And I’m beginning to wonder if Bates really did kill his ex.
Becky – I agree. I feel like DA glosses over too many things. If I have a gripe about the few British series I’ve really followed closely, it is that they seem to betray the character development. I felt that way a couple of times about Monarch of the Glen, especially when Katrina left the show. They spent two seasons developing the Archie-Katrina relationship and then gave a totally out-of-character reason for destroying the very thing they had been leading up to! I feel that way about certain aspects of DA.
My bet is that Edith ends up better married than Mary in the end, but only time will tell. It would be great to see some storyline develop where Edith is the one who has to save Mary at some point. LOL!
Oh my gosh, don’t even get me started on Monarch of the Glen!! I’m really mad at that show right now! I’ve been watching it off and on for a year or so but lately have been watching an episode before bed each night. I agree on the Katrina/Archie thing. I don’t like either one of them much and think they were well suited to each other. I just finished season 3 earlier this week and was absolutely shocked that they killed off Hector in such a horrible way! And so far in season 4 no one seems to miss him but me! It’s just not the same without him. And why is Molly acting half her age and more cheerful than ever now that Hector’s gone?! Anyway back to DA…
I wonder if Edith, who is now turning into a writer, will end up with Sir Richard Carlisle, the newspaperman? Have you taken the DA job quiz? It said that Isobel Crawley’s role was the right job for me.
I really liked Archie and Katrina so I was glad when they finally got together. But I felt like the way Archie and Hector were at the end before Hector died wasn’t right. And the way Lexie responded to Archie’s marriage proposal wasn’t right either. It was like the writers changed the characters in a way that wasn’t true to who they led us to believe they were. I find that irritating.
I sincerely hope Edith doesn’t end up with Sir Richard. I can’t stand him. He’s a controlling, manipulative snake. I’d rather see her single. Maybe she’ll end up with Tom? Or maybe the disfigured cousin will come back restored. Ha! He’ll come back restored with proof of who he is and Mary will be out and Edith will be in. That would be something! LOL!
(Anyone else see a pattern here that I want Mary taken down a few notches. I. can’t. help. myself.)
And I took the who DA quiz just now and when I pushed for the results I got an error. Lost everything. Oh well.
I just tried to take the quiz, too, and it didn’t work. Oh well. What is up with Mary? I simply cannot imagine needing to be so nasty, especially to your sister when your other sister has just DIED. And she is SO mean to her husband, I just want to go in and rescue him!! Yes, I, too am done with the Bates story line… I love every minute of it, and I sometimes watch it twice a week as my PBS replays it on Wednesday. Tomorrow night, it’s all about Downton for me, no Superbowl.
I know what happens. Won’t share a bit.
BUT JUST YOU WAIT.
I know part of what happens but I won’t tell.
I remarked to my daughter in law that I don’t like Mary or her dad this season. She told me to keep watching…
I am also tired of the prison subplot. It was interesting for a few weeks but it has dragged on too long.
